Local experts will provide information on pesticide-free lawn care and how to harvest rainwater with a rain barrel, get locally grown produce through community-supported agriculture, reduce junk mail, get a free street tree from the city of Boston, and use native plants to attract butterflies and birds. Residents who have limited or no yard space can learn about growing herbs and vegetables in containers and setting up a “worm-composting bin.”
New this year is an exhibit on Fairy Gardens provided by Roslindale florist Dandelions. Village Books will be on hand with gardening books, and the Boston Urban Forestry Coalition will provide information about Boston’s plan to plant 100,000 trees in the city by 2010. And back by popular demand is the backyard composting demonstration that demonstrates how to compost and obtain a low-cost compost bin from the city of Boston.
Children’s activities include story times at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and how to make a pinecone bird feeder.
The Cooperative Bank of Roslindale, Dunkin’ Donuts and Dandelions are all supporting the event. Door prizes include two backyard compost bins (provided by the city of Boston), a rain barrel (from the Boston Building Materials Co-op), three planted container gardens and a membership to the Arnold Arboretum.

Roslindale Green and Clean is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and maintaining a clean and healthy Roslindale through advocacy, outreach, public green space improvements, and the preservation and expansion of Roslindale’s tree canopy. In recent years, RGC has partnered with local organizations to design and install new award-winning plantings around the Roslindale Public Library, at the traffic islands on Belgrade Avenue, at Taft Hill Terrace, and at Savage Mini Park on Birch Street. Next month, Roslindale Green & Clean will be installing a new garden in Alexander the Great Park with the help of a $9,750 grant from the city of Boston. The Greek Spirit Committee, connected with St. Nectarios Church, is providing funds for an irrigation system at the site and are working with RGC on this project.
